Recommended breakfast spots in New York
New Yorkers start their mornings early!
Some people go running in Central Park from the crack of dawn, and lately more businesspeople have been skipping night drinking and heading to morning business meetings instead.
That’s why New York is a fierce breakfast battleground, packed with restaurants that open early and serve outstanding breakfasts! Here, we’ve handpicked the breakfast spots you’ll definitely want to visit when traveling to New York.
Le CouCou
138 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10013
Mon-Sat: 7am-10:30am, 11:30am-2pm, 5pm-11pm
Sun: 8:00am-6:00pm
Le CouCou is a French restaurant on the first floor of the fashionable boutique hotel 11 Howard in SoHo.
It was ranked 85th on the restaurant awards list “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” and has also earned a Michelin star, making it a true standout.
The vintage-inspired decor and exposed brick give the restaurant a stylish look, and the high ceilings create a spacious, open feel.
The restaurant was created by Stephen Starr, who has launched many popular restaurants across the U.S., including The Clocktower and Upland.
The chef is Daniel Rose, known for the popular Paris bistro Chez La Vieille. It’s popular with New Yorkers because they can experience authentic Parisian flavors without leaving New York.
In particular, dinner time and weekend brunch time are often so busy that it’s hard to get a reservation.
For breakfast, the pancake is especially recommended. Served on a piping-hot skillet, it has a delicate, light texture far removed from the kind you’d get at an American diner. The pairing with cream and blueberries is, of course, excellent.
Lexington Candy Shop
1226 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY
Mon-sat: 7:00am-7:00pm
Sun: 8:00am-6:00pm
Lexington Candy Shop was founded in 1925! It’s a historic, long-established diner that has been around for three generations.
Located in the heart of the Upper East Side, just steps from 86th Street subway station, this place is filled with local regulars who order without even looking at the menu and call the staff by name—a beloved neighborhood staple.
Inside, the walls are covered with photos and posters, making it feel like a movie set!
It still holds on to the strong atmosphere of 1920s America, so you can definitely enjoy a nostalgic vibe.
The menu focuses on classic American dishes like omelets, sandwiches, and hamburgers.
You’ll also find old-school diner specialties like egg cream and candy soda!
A must-try is the Cinnamon Walnut Raisin French Toast. It looks sweet at first glance, but that’s pure America. If you have a sweet tooth, you should definitely give it a try.
Murray’s Bagels
500 6th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Everyday:6:30am-6:00pm
When you think of a New Yorker’s breakfast, you think bagels!
Among the many bagel shops out there, one of New York’s most popular is Murray’s Bagels, with its blue flag and stylish brick wall.
It fits perfectly with the trendy atmosphere of Greenwich Village.
This shop opens at 6:30 in the morning and has a line almost nonstop from the start of the day.
With an emphasis on handmade quality, it attracts plenty of tourists, but it also has many New York fans, which makes perfect sense. There are all kinds, from simple ones to hearty versions packed with fillings.
With a delicious bagel, you can start the day off right.
At this bagel shop, you choose your bagel and the filling yourself. Bagels come in all kinds of varieties, such as plain, poppy seed, sesame, onion, salt, and garlic!
If you ask for “everything,” you’ll get a bagel topped with all of them.
The filling options are endless! Cheese, lettuce, tomato, cheese—choose whatever you like and make your own bagel.
If it’s your first time, smoked salmon is recommended! Paired with cream cheese, it’s so delicious it’ll blow you away.
By the way, if you’re imagining a Japanese-style bagel, these are surprisingly large, so for women, sharing one between two people might be just right.
Supermoon Bakehouse
120 Rivington St. New York, NY 10002
Mon-Thu: 8:00am-1:00pm
Fri: 8:00am-11:00pm
Sat-Sun:9:00am-11:00pm
The bakery that suddenly appeared on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and instantly became the talk of the town is Supermoon Bakehouse.
It’s the New York location of Mister Holmes Bakehouse, the shop that created the croffin (croissant + muffin), a hybrid pastry that caused a huge buzz in San Francisco.
Unlike a typical bakery, the products are displayed in a row on samples placed on a large pink marble table—pretty surprising!
When you order from the staff, they bring it out from the back.
And best of all, what Instagram-loving women are crazy about is the row of silver boxes shimmering in holographic colors behind it!
No matter how you frame it, it’s Instagram-worthy. This is a bakery like no other, one that grabs hold of the hearts of trendy girls and won’t let go.
With this display, you can really take your time looking at the products, imagining what they taste like, and getting excited about them!
Croissants are the main attraction, but they also had doughnuts, kouign-amann, and of course croffins.
Apparently, the popular items can sell out early.
The strawberry croissant is especially recommended! It’s a hot item that’s guaranteed to sell out.
